Walki group from Finland acquires Plasbel, a leading packaging manufacturer in Spain, expanding its offer of sustainable packaging solutions and its geographical presence.

Plasbel is integrated into Walki Group, an industrial group of Finnish origin with a strong presence in 12 countries in Europe and Asia. This union is the result of the spirit of improvement of both companies.

The Walki group has announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire a majority stake in Plasbel Plásticos S.A.U (“Plasbel”), a leading company in sustainable packaging solutions in Spain. Plasbel is engaged in the production of film used in plastic bags of recycled and biodegradable origin, as well as flexible packaging products used in the food, hospitality and retail sectors. In 2020, Plasbel recorded a turnover of about 80 million euros, employing more than 290 people.

Plasbel expands Walki’s geographical presence thanks to its state-of-the-art factory of more than 30,000 sq.m., located in Murcia, where the company offers a wide range of food packaging solutions, as well as recycled film and biodegradable origin with main applications in the retail and hospitality sectors. “This acquisition marks an important milestone for Walki, as part of our strategy to promote the circular economy and the use of sustainable packaging materials. Plasbel is a unique company in the sector, with a first-class management team and a range of products that will experience strong growth in the coming years. We look forward to supporting their ambitious expansion project in the future,” said Leif Frilund, President and CEO of Walki Group. “Plasbel not only brings diversity to our product portfolio by adding many sustainable alternatives, but also facilitates entry to top-tier customers in Spain and abroad.”

“We are very excited to be part of the great Walki family, and enter this new phase of growth, with the aim of consolidating our leadership in Spain and further expanding our geographical reach. In addition, the complementary R&D capabilities will help the combined group to become one of the leading biofilm manufacturers in southern Europe, providing attractive opportunities for future expansion,” said Antonio Beltrán, CEO and shareholder of Plasbel.

Plasbel will support the continued growth of Walki’s film and packaging business and become part of the Consumer Packaging division.
